No doubt hoping to dig into Apple’s hold on the education market with their iTunesU service, Microsoft has given free Zune’s to 100 students at a rural New Mexico high school in an experiment with audio lectures and videos.

Microsoft gave $400 bounses to teachers whom designed lectures to be recorded for the devices. In exchange for the 100 $300 Zunes, the school had to agree to provide Microsoft data on whether or not using the Zune’s as a studying aid helped them increase their test scores. (No doubt in hopes to justify buying the Zune for educational purposes.

Apparently the trial was mostly positive, but some teachers didn’t see how using the Zune’s helped any students, as they were used primarily for non academic purposes.

History teacher John Wotton said;

I just didn’t see where kids used it as intended. So far, I haven’t talked to one who used it for academic purposes, studying.
