Phone or no phone? Some say Zune phone is unlikely
Rumor are abound over the much talked about Zune phone, some bloggers are claiming Microsoft has one in the works and many other say they are not. I wish Microsoft would just come out and confirm or deny it already. Jupiter Researches Michael Gartenberg wrote in his blog about his take on this topic. According to him its very unlikely that a Zune phone is on the horizon. Gartenberg said the following regarding the possibility of a Zune phone:
The phone is different. WinMo is a core platform and OS. No one has ever been successful licensing technology platforms to others and then competing with a device of their own. Apple failed (twice), Palm and Nokia all tried it and it just can’t be done. Microsoft now has traction with more than 20 million licenses out there and a great stream of partners and new phones for consumer and business use. A Zune phone from MSFT would potentially hurt all that.
I’m sure Microsoft would love to steal some of the iPhones thunder, but at the moment they’re far behind in the cell phone MP3 player category. If they do plan on a Zune phone let’s hope it does even better then the Zune has done against the Apple iPod.
